There ain't no good in an evil hearted woman. And I ain't cut out to be no Jesse James. And you don't go writing hot checks down in Mississippi. And there ain't no good chain gang.
Or so Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings say.
As an Ohioan, I've seen a chain gang on the highway before, picking up trash. I've even heard about prisoners making license plates. But I never dreamed I'd see them out in the woods.
But sure enough, there's a need out here in California for wild fire maintenance, and as such the prisoners carry an axe into the days hot sun.
Seems like a good gig, relatively speaking.
This is just another regional quirk of this fine country.
I saw another lesser known quirk on my drive to San Diego. While passing through Death Valley, I saw a snow plow clearing the road. You read that right.
Apparently the sand drifts are big enough out there to block the road if neglected.
The more you know.
But remember, there ain't no good chain gang.
